The girls get very excited about working with their “sisters” in their family groups. The students in J4 have been working on a very interesting project that focused on ways to improve our school. Each group presented their projects today. Their topics included: the history of the College and the role of sport. They also plan to work with one of our groundsmen, Ray, on cleaning out the pond by the Dining Hall and to put fish into it. You may have noticed that they have also yarn-bombed some of the trees on the grounds too. Well done, J4, great work!
Thank you!
Due to your generosity, we will now be able to build 4 houses for families in Vellure, India. The school raised enough to build two houses (€2400) through the raffle and donations on the day, one Alex family gave the full amount for one house (€1200) and the highest bid in the Sealed Bid Auction for the premium tickets to this weekend’s All Ireland Final will cover the cost of another house. Pat and Sian Fitzgerald would like to thank each and every one of you for your unbelievable generosity.
Every cent raised in Alex will go towards building the houses. The teachers (Ms. Stapleton, Ms. Healy and Ms. O’Shea) going to Vellure with the Fitzgeralds have raised their own money to cover their airfares and other expenses.
A Message of Thanks from the Fitzgeralds
We wanted to express our sincerest gratitude to all the staff, students and parents of Alexandra College Junior School. We have been overwhelmed by your generous support of the fundraiser held last Friday. From competition and auction contributions to financial giving, the fundraiser was a huge success and the final figure raised is €4800. These funds will go directly into our current project in India, which is building homes for gypsy families that live in absolutely appalling conditions. We have been running a feeding programe in this gypsy camp for over 5 years and when we saw, firsthand, the living conditions of this community we immediately set about working out how we could bring aid and change directly into their day to day lives. The security and safety that a home creates for these families is priceless and it is our long term goal to see every family in this village safely homed. We are so excited to travel to India on the 29th October, bringing the good news that Alexandra College Junior School has so generously contributed to this project and that we are in a position to start building homes for four more families! We know this is going to be so exciting and these families will be deeply touched buy the kindness of ‘strangers that care’.
We will be back in November with pictures, names and very happy faces of the people you have reached, as we know they will be eager to thank you themselves!
During our visit in October we will also hold an official opening of the playground that we built in MBKG orphanage, with the help of last year’s fundraiser. We will have lots of happy photos and maybe some videos of playtime at MBKG when we get back!!
So, finally, thank you all, once again, your support, enthusiasm and generosity-it is greatly appreciated and, with your help, we can continue to realise our vision of reaching as many as we can who are in such great need in India.

J3: “I am Unique and Special”
The theme of the J3 assembly today was based on Froebel’s philosophy of the uniqueness of each child and how no two children learn in the same way.
The assembly began with each child telling the school how they completed projects based on their own interests. They told their peers what their chosen topic was and explained that the variety of topics demonstrate how they are unique individuals.
They then discussed how all of the children in the school are unique and special individuals and how there is no one else in their classroom, school community or indeed anywhere, who is exactly like them.
It was a wonderful assembly and many thanks to all the girls in J3 and Mr. Fitzgerald for all the work they put into it.
Sports Update
Hockey: The J6 girls are playing friendly games at the moment in preparation for the upcoming league matches.
Athletics: A group of girls from J5 and J6 went off to Santry on Wednesday to participate in an athletics event. They had great fun and performed well.
Alex150 Ardilaun Lecture 2016
On Tuesday evening, an audience of over 100 students, staff, alumnae and guests packed into the concourse of Alexandra College to enjoy a fascinating lecture delivered by the renowned historian Professor Roy Foster. Professor Foster is currently the Carroll Professor of Irish History at Hertford College, Oxford. Prior to his current appointment he was Professor of Modern British History at University of London. Some of his published works include, Charles Stewart Parnell: The Man and His Family and Lord Randolph Churchill: A Political Life.

This was not Professor Foster’s first time visiting Alexandra College, having delivered the Ardilaun lecture 19 years ago in 1997. His lecture at this year’s Alex150 event was entitled ‘Women, Radicalisation and the Irish Revolution.’ The lecture focused on the processes and factors that lead the women of Ireland to be radicalised in the years leading up to and indeed after the 1916 revolution, through pivotal movements like the Land League, and through social changes like the growth of women’s education, that Alexandra College had such a large role to play in.
Following the lecture Tim Fanning, son of Ronan Fanning, introduced and officially launched the book edited by his father, Pioneering Alexandrans 1866-2016. The book, which was specially commissioned for the Alex150 celebrations, charts the lives and accomplishments of 77 Alexandrans that ‘reflect the diversity that encapsulates the pioneers, innovators and reformers from one of Ireland’s most prestigious educational establishments.” A limited number of these books are now available to by from the College for €25.

Traffic Management on the School Grounds: In order to keep every student and parent in Alex safe, it is very important that everyone follows the signs for the one-way system. It is very disappointing to hear that some parents are being rude to our traffic warden, Lorenzo. Lorenzo is doing the job he is asked to do – keep the traffic flow moving smoothly and safely on the school grounds. We would appreciate it if everyone would co-operate with the system in place.
Reminder: Dogs are not allowed on the school grounds at any time! This includes weekends.
School Photos: A consent form must be signed and returned before photos can be taken. Julie will take photos on Monday, October 24th– October 27th. The consent form went home in schoolbags this week.

“Living History, Living God”
A group of girls from J4 attended the annual Dublin and Glendalough service for Primary School and Junior Schools on Thursday morning. Over 600 students attended the service in Christ Church Cathedral. Each school was asked to bring a representation of their school crest and a short prayer. These were put into a special time capsure shaped as a round tower. It was a very uplifting service and was enjoyed by everyone.

Alex 150: Junior School Celebrates Founders Day
Every year, Alexandra College marks Founders Day throughout the school. This year is a very special year as the college marks its 150th birthday. The Junior School held a special assembly on the day where classes created poems, videos and songs on what makes Alexandra College Junior School so special to them.
J6 made a super short movie, J5 put new lyrics to a High School musical song, J4 wrote haikus and KGUpr, J1, J2 and J3 all wrote wonderful acrostic poems on the theme. KGLower drew pictures showing their favourite things about Alex.
The assembly ended with our Preschoolers leading us all singing “Happy Birthday” to Alexandra College. There were great cheers as Ms. Ennis and Ms. Corr gave a chocolate treat to everyone and Ms. Lamplugh gave a “No Homework” night!
This is an acrostic poem that the J2 class wrote:
Alexandra College is fantastic
Learning is what we do
Educating girls for 150 years
Xtraordinary teachers and students

Concert for Kolkata – 17th November
Anyone who has been part of the Alex community over the last decade will know of the HOPE foundation and the long history Alexandra College have with this incredible organisation. Over the last 13 years, the College has raised over half a million Euro for the charity. The vast majority of these funds come from fund raising events organised by the students and staff, one of the corner stone events in the Alex fundraising calendar is the annual Concert for Kolkata.
The concert is a showcase for the wide variety of incredible talent we have here in the College. The show will take place in the school concourse and starts at 7:30pm on Thursday 17th November, tickets will be available at the door and all proceeds will go towards the HOPE Foundation. Not only is this a chance for you to see some of the incredible talent in both our music and drama departments but it is your chance to help an amazing charity and a worthy cause.
Alexandra College has been involved with the Hope Foundation since 2005. The organisation was set up in 1999 to help restore basic human rights to the street children of Kolkata. The aim of the charity is to provide shelter, healthcare, education, nutrition, counseling and support to underprivileged children and at-risk young women, and to promote economic self-sufficiency by providing skills training and facilitating the establishment of co-ops. Hope works in partnership with 10 non-government organisations and presently funds 50 projects that are making a real difference to the lives of children, young women and their families. In the past the school has funded the Polio hospital and today funds training centres , drop in centres and creches which provide education, skills training and nutrition to a large number of street children. Every year a small number of fifth year students are selected to go to Kolkata and see first hand the work carried out by the Hope Foundation and the projects that the College supports and funds. For many of these students it is a life changing experience, an emotional, unforgettable visit. So whether you are a parent, a student, alumni, a member of staff past or present, we urge you to join us for a great night on the 17th of November. It is only with your continued support that Hope can continue to do its vital work on the streets of Calcutta.

We look forward to hearing all about their trip when they get back.
Stay Safe for Halloween!
The KG Uppers have been learning all about staying safe at Halloween. Halloween is a fun and exciting night, but the children explained that it is also important to be careful as well. Here are our top tips for staying safe:
- Always walk with an adult. It is dark and you can easily get lost.
- Use a torch or a glow stick so people and cars can see you in the dark.
- Only go to houses where you can see a light on.
- Only go to houses where you know the people who live there.
- Cross the road at a safe place.
- Pay attention when you walk past driveways. A car might be driving in or out.
- Make sure your costume is not too long so you don’t trip over it.
- Do not eat any sweets or treats until your mum or dad says you can.
Watch out for candles in pumpkins.
Walk don’t run.

Friday 2nd Christmas Hampers for Mrs. Carr’s’ Home delivered by J6
From the Office
New School Secretary: I would like to welcome Carol Higgins to the Junior School office. She has taken over from Ms. Airey, who is now the Admissions Officer for the whole school, Senior, Junior and boarding. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms. Airey for all the work she has done in the JS over that past two and a half years. She will continue to be a part of the Junior School, as she will be dealing with all the JS admissions.
Violin Lessons: The Junior School’s violin teacher Ms O’Rourke is now admitting students to start violin from KGUpper onwards. If you’d like your daughter to start violin, please contact her on elinahakanenorourke@alexandracollege.ie.
Lunch Card Top Ups: Please make sure your daughter has money on her lunch card. If the cards are continuously in arrears, this creates a lot of admin work for the catering staff on a daily basis. When some parents top up by €50.00, if the card is in arrears, it will use up most of the credit. You can send in money to the office to top up or top up online via the website.
Missing Scooter! Parents, if your daughter came to school on a scooter this week, please check it. A student in J3 is missing her Micro Scooter. It is pink with black handles. More than likely, some child took it as it looked like hers. As many of the scooters look the same, please try to put names on them.

Christmas Card orders went home in schoolbags on Monday. Thank you for your support for this fundraiser.
2016 Toy and Book Fair: It’s that time of year again! The Annual Toy and Book Fair is due to take place on Friday December 9th at 1.30pm in the JS concourse. The J6 girls are very much looking forward to running this Alex event. It is one of the most hotly anticipated events in the JACA calendar! We would appreciate it if you would have a look through all your toy cupboards and if you find toys or books for girls or boys that you no longer need/use, we would be delighted to have them.
These toys can be left into the school any morning up until Thurs. 8th (but the sooner the better). Please do not send in damaged or broken toys. If your child prepares the bag, we would appreciate if you would check through it as we have had some broken or inappropriate items accidentally donated in the past.
We will also be running a raffle for the children. If any of you would like to donate any items for this, it would also be much appreciated. These can be given to your Class Rep or left into the school office.
All queries can be directed to your class rep or the school office.
Many thanks in for the great support!

The girls had worked exceedingly hard on their poems since the start of term and their performances were outstanding. Christmas in the Junior School
There is an air of excitement in the Junior School this week with the beginning of Advent, the start of December and of course the Toy Show this Friday night! We used the theme of Alex 150 to decorate our Christmas tree this year in the Junior School. Each class got a different template of an ornament to decorate and as you can see, the girls did a wonderful job! Many thanks to Ms. Boyd for planning this activity and for decorating the tree and windows. This is a very special tree to mark this very special year in Alexandra College. Well done, everyone!
A Huge Thank You!
Many thanks for all the support given to us last Friday at the Hope Foundation Charity Lunch in Marco Pierre White’s. The afternoon was a great success with lots of money raised and we cannot wait to see it being put to great use when we go to Kolkata in March next year. Thanks so much again!

The J6 A and B teams enjoyed a hockey blitz in Mount Anville on Tuesday and the J5 A and B teams played well against Kildare Place Junior School on Thursday afternoon. Keep up the good work, girls. League matches will start in January.
J6 – Important Life Skills
The J6 assembly today focused on the importance of sharing and turn taking. They spent a few Art lessons creating a big mural where after 15 minutes everyone had to switch places and continue drawing on someone else’s creation. Very interesting result! The girls spoke about the lessons that they learned – to value other people’s opinions and to realize that everyone is different and special in their own way.

Regional Finalist – 2016 Intel Mini Scientist Competition
Belle Moore (J4) Title: Using Drones to Deliver Parcels in Dublin: a Feasibility Study
Please read about the remarkable work that Belle Moore has put into her project. We would like to wish her all the very best as she takes part in the regional final of the competition.
“I have been very busy since I won the Intel Mini Scientist Competition in our school on November 17th. I have visited the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) who make the rules and regulations for drone flight in Ireland. They were very helpful, especially Captain Niall Cummins. They gave me lots of information and a tour of their offices.
I visited FDS Worldwide who deliver Parcels all over the world to ask if they thought international drone parcel delivery would ever be possible. The staff filled in questionnaires which were very informative.I also visited the cockpit of an Aer Lingus Airbus 320. Captain Karl Mc Quaid explained to me about radar and drones.I was invited to a Civil Defence Awards ceremony in the Phoenix Park where some of their members were awarded with their drone training certificates (see below!) RTE were there filming and it was on the news that night.
Last weekend, I became the youngest person in Ireland to have received the IAA approved iFly Technology Drone Training Groundschool Certificate. I had two tests-an open book test and a closed book test-and I got 89% overall. It was very interesting and the course took two full days to complete.I’m looking forward to competing on behalf of Alexandra Junior School in the Regional Finals of the Mini Intel Scientist Competition in Leixlip.”
