J2 and J3 Science Project – The Dodder and Building Bridges

On Friday, 12th May, J2 and J3 used recycled materials to design and construct bridges. Our work was inspired by our recent trip along the Dodder when we saw Milltown Bridge, the Packhorse Bridge, the Nine Arches and Classons Bridge. Each girl drew a plan of a bridge and from these designs, a bridge was collaboratively created by each twin Family Group. The result was five constructions, which included ramps, safety rails, landscaping, vehicles, a pedestrian and even a stalactite. We enjoyed working together and watching each group present their creation in the hall.

J2 Safe Cross Code Assembly

On Friday, 19th May, J2 performed a class assembly on the theme of Road Safety and the Safe Cross Code. We presented our posters, which showed pedestrians, cars, a bus, a lollipop man, a lollipop woman and traffic lights. We sang and danced to the Safe Cross Code song and we encouraged the rest of the classes to perform it with us. We read a prayer, which we wrote and we hope that everyone travels safely wherever they go over the summer. We enjoyed teaching our friends about road safety.

Sports Update

Soccer Semis – Update
At last! After 19 very hard fought and intense games and five penalty shootouts… we have our two Finalists!

Preston and Hull will contest the Grand Finale of our inaugural Soccer League!

We say a big CONGRATULATIONS to the girls on both teams for reaching the final but also to the semi-finalists from Delap and White who were excellent all the way through the competition. Best wishes to Sophia Kenny in J6 who hurt her foot in the Semi-Final… hopefully, she will be fit enough to take the field on Grand Final Day!

On a sad note to end this report, while the final was originally planned for next week, due to a family bereavement suffered by our very own Ms Tracey, we feel it is inappropriate to stage the game at this time and as a mark of respect we will confirm a new date and time as soon as possible. Go dtuga dia suaimhneas síoraí di.

E. Fitzgerald.

This week the Filmmaking Module hosted the 8th annual Film Festival and screened ten short films over both lunchtimes each day.

Hundreds of students from all the year groups attended the screenings in the Lecture Theatre. Students brought their lunches with them and each person who attended was able to vote for the audience prize.

The standard of movies produced by this group was fantastic, from documentary to music video and short films, it was clear to see that the girls in this module had worked very hard.

There was a panel of judges who attended the screenings each day, made up of students from each year group and a small number of teachers. Each judge voted for their favourite film in a number of specified categories.

The Lecture Theatre was transformed into a mini Hollywood for the Oscar Ceremony which took place on Wednesday afternoon for all 4th Year, the overall winners are below. Well done to the Filmmaking Students.

Fun Day 2017

We were blessed with great weather for this year’s Fun Day, which was held last Friday, May 19th. The week before Fourth Years had held an assembly where they announced the theme for Fun Day – Alex Arcade. Each year group was given a particular video game to dress up as. They were Pokémon, Mario Bro’s, Fifa and Call of Duty. The Fifth-Years dressed up as gamers (people who play video games) and all Sixth Year students wore their uniform from First Year, which is an Alex tradition. Everyone made a huge effort to dress up and the students put in a massive effort to decorate the Concourse.

The day started out with debates. Two teams, consisting of students and teachers, discussed different topics with one side against the statement and the other agreeing with it. Before the surprise round, students were picked from the crowd to discuss topics such as Does pineapple belong on pizza?  Everyone enjoyed the debate.

In the afternoon students went out to the field to take part in Sports Day and even the teachers got involved! Activities included: girls wrestling with each other in giant sumo suits, penalty shootouts with the teachers, races and lots more events took place throughout the afternoon. The day concluded with a football match between students and teachers.

A great day was had by all!

J4 Visit Butler’s Chocolate Factory

On Monday morning, J4 set off with great excitement in the school bus, on the way to the long-awaited trip to Butler’s Chocolate Factory.  When we arrived, the girls were outfitted in long white coats and hairnets.  We watched a video explaining the origins and history of chocolate, before the main event: a tour of the factory floor itself. Our guide explained the many processes involved in making fudge, filled chocolates and gianduja very clearly. The girls saw every stage of the chocolate-making process from vats of tempering liquid chocolate, to filling with delicious centres, cooling and finally packing and packaging.

We then entered the chocolate museum, where the girls took part in a quiz.  Finally, we were able to have a hand at chocolate-making ourselves, learning how truffles and hollow chocolates are made.  We were then able to decorate our very own chocolate elephants to take home.  Everyone had lots of fun and people got very creative.

Many girls now have ambitions of becoming professional chocolate tasters!

Ms Richardson.

Bizworld Regional Final

Following on from the very successful Bizworld programme that took place in J5 last week, one of the groups was selected to compete in the Dublin Regional Final in Trinity College. The team, “KidBit” presented their digital device to a new group of “Dragons” and they were super! Their classmates in J5 cheered them on enthusiastically. While they didn’t move on to the national final, the girls’ presentation went very well and they were awarded a special merit. They were presented with a €100 book token as a prize.

“KidBit” regional finalists – Ava Hartley, Lizzie O’ Reilly Hyland, Aisling Finn, Lucy Maguire and Aoife Connolly.

Well done, girls!

We love Roald Dahl!

In J1 we have been learning about one of our favourite authors, Roald Dahl. We researched some funny facts; did you know that Roald was a chocolate taster when he was a little boy?! We also learnt a poem, “Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf” that Roald Dahl wrote. It’s a bit different to the story we know and it has a very funny ending!

Ms Byrne.

Sports Day 2017

The sun shone brightly as all the Junior School girls and teachers made their way over to the field for our annual Sports Day. The preschoolers ran their races separately and enjoyed all the fun. KGLr to J1 all took part enthusiastically in their activities on the astro turf pitch. The older girls showed great team spirit and good sportsmanship as they moved from station to station too. Many thanks to all the teachers and staff for helping out and especially to Ms Evans and Mr Fitzgerald for planning and the day and for making sure that everything ran smoothly. The photos below portray the fun we all had!

The Transition Year (TY) Presentation Night was an evening full of music, laughter and tears. Principal Barbara Ennis and TY Coordinator Katie Fanagan welcomed everyone to the Concourse where the event was held, on Wednesday, May 24th.

The evening started off with an incredible performance of Wedding Day at Troldhaugen on the piano by Grace Gollogley. Throughout the night, students reflected on each term of Fourth Year sharing with us their favourite memories from the year. We were treated to solo performances of Wherever You Are by 5 Seconds of Summer sung by Berenice Berlan, Carry On by Olivia Holt sung by Maria Matutano and another piano performance of I Giorni by Ludivico Einaudi beautifully played by Francesca Lorusso. The TY students shared with us a special performance of Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus, which was a song very close to their hearts.

Throughout the evening, each student was presented with a folder containing all of the certificates they achieved during the year.

Alexandra College ROCKJAM band ARKO performed Creep by Raidohead and Mr. Brightside by the Killers. They also performed a song, written by two of the band members called Once Again. The evening concluded with a rendition of the Fourth Year group’s Culwick song It’s Raining Men.

The winner of the Artisans Market was also announced on the night by William from Bretzel Bakery. Congratulations Little Mexico.

There were some special awards given out on the night also. Aoife McMorrow was awarded The Violet Mollen Cup, Stephanie Foley was awarded The Barbara Stanley Shield and Felicity Turley was awarded The Louise Crosbie Memorial Award, which is given to the student of the year.

The presentation night showed the incredible talent among the TY students. We wish the girls who will be leaving us after this year the very best of luck with the rest of their studies at home.

Farewell Assembly 2017

On Tuesday, the Class of 2017 graduated from Alexandra College. The assembly was held in the heart of the school, the concourse, and the turnout was phenomenal. The girls all looked stunning as they gathered together for the last time as a year group.

The Principal, Barbara Ennis, gave a warm and very encouraging address to everyone at the assembly, especially to those who were graduating. Reverend Sonia Gyles also addressed the assembly and gave a touching blessing to all the Sixth Years for what lies ahead in their future.

Beautiful performances included:  Mr Brightside by the string quartet, For Good by the Sixth Year Ensemble, Ithaca by the Verse Speaking Choir and renditions of Wherever I Go and I Lived by the Sixth Year group.

Madeleine Diepman, president of the prefects, gave a heartfelt speech to her classmates and teachers about her time in Alex. Amy McDonnell, vice president of the prefects, read a Bible reading to the assembly.

While Aideen Corr closed the assembly, hearts were heavy, but the Class of 2017 is excited about the future. The girls each received a class ring to remember their time in Alex, however, with all the amazing memories they have created over the years, I don’t think they will ever forget their time at Alexandra College.

The girls gathered in the quadrangle, for the honoured tradition of the balloon release, something the girls had been looking forward to all day.

To the Class of 2017, we wish you all the best for the future and especially in your upcoming Leaving Certificate exams.

Please note:

Uniform (J2-J6)

All girls in J2-J6 may wear their PE uniform for the last two weeks of the school year.

Lost Property!

There are a lot of unclaimed uniform items in the JS Hall that have no names on them (PE tops and bottoms, brown jumpers, Alex 150 hoodies, school shorts). If your daughter is missing something, please check the pile in the hall.

ROCKJAM Classes – 2017/2018

Due to the huge demand for places for ROCKJAM for the next school year, we have had to add extra times. The first 16 forms that came in will get Tuesday slots (3-4pm and 4-5pm).

New times will be:

Wednesday 8.00am – 9.00am

Thursday 3.00pm – 4.00pm and 4.00pm – 5.00pm

Important Reminder: J2-J6 2017/2018

Some of you have been asking again about the dividing up of the classes from J2-J6 next year. An email explaining this matter was sent to all parents on May 15th. It read as follows:

As you know, the school is expanding for the 2017/2018 school year. We will have two class groups from J2-J6. This necessitates the dividing up of some of our current classes to accommodate the forthcoming new J2-J6 students.

We appreciate the fact that many of you would like to request who your daughter is placed with. Classes will be made up of a mixture of existing students combined with the incoming students. The current Class Teachers will make the selection based on a number of factors that we assure you will be in each child’s best interest. The school colours, red and white, will be used to name the classes e.g. J2W and J2R

J2, J3 and J4 will remain in the main Junior School building with each class adjacent to each other. J5 and J6 will be upstairs in Jellicoe, which is the building facing the green area at the front of the school. The girls will continue to socialise together in the mornings before school, assembly time, break/yard, lunch in the Dining Hall and during Family Group time.

You will be notified of your daughter’s class teacher and class group during the last week of the school term (June 12th – 16th). No changes will be made between the assigned groupings.

D.E.A.R Week

Reading a good book is something that we all enjoy and many classes take 10 minutes each day to Drop Everything And Read. The Student Council encouraged us all to have DEAR time for 10 minutes every day this week.

Green Day 2017

Our wonderful Green Schools Committee got us all involved in a special day of activities focusing on environmental matters. They included:

  • KG Lower and KG Upper made Energy Chains to learn about conserving energy.
  • J1 learned about the importance of recycling, particularly how important it is to recycle plastic bottles and newspaper.
  • J2 read the poem My Family’s fond of Gadgets by Kenn Nesbitt to learn about how the use of electronics impacts upon our environment.
  • The J2 Green School Members (Taylor and Hannah) performed a quick drama at morning assembly about the proper disposal of litter.
  • The J3 and J5 Green School members performed during assembly time, also highlighting how important it is to ensure that the school is litter-free.
  • J6 participated in a quiz about the topic of energy conservation and usage in class.
  • Everyone in school (pupils, teachers and staff) took part in Energy Hour where the use of photocopiers, computers, interactive whiteboards, printers etc. were out of bounds for an hour between 9 and 10am in an effort to reduce our energy use.

Talented Musicians!

Mr Rycraft’s guitar group had us all tapping our toes and swaying to some great tunes on Thursday at assembly. Well done to all the girls – Lola Rose Turley, Orla de Schonen, Hannah Stuart, Ailbhe Mooney, Katie Mullan and Carmel Deirdre Humphries.

KGUpper Assembly

The KG Uppers have been learning all about Monet and impressionism and shared lots of interesting facts about the famous artist.  They spent a great deal of time creating their own impressions of Monet art- lily ponds and the Japanese water bridge from his garden in Giverny, as well as a sketch of the artist himself, which they displayed at assembly.  They did a fantastic job- well done, girls!

Alex Soccer Cup Final – Thursday 1st June 2017

After 29 games, including a final that had a 2-2 draw, extra time and even Sudden Death penalty shootout, we have FINALLY found our first ever Alex 150 Cup Champions. We extend our congratulations to the Hull team led by captain Alice Kelly and Vice-Captain Sophia Kenny (both J6). We should of course not forget our excellent runners-up Preston who were just pipped at the final hurdle. This game could really have gone either way. Anyone who was in the HWC would tell you that this one was way too close to call.

The noise in the hall was deafening as Shona Ashmore announced the teams to a brilliant audience of pupils, teachers and parents before the teams themselves emerged from the corridor and walked onto the court alá Wembley Stadium. Leading the teams onto the field was of course our team of match officials: Michelle Scanlan (Ref), Val Lusk and Monica Tracey (Assistants) who ensured that the game was played fairly and really added to the occasion.

We were scoreless up to half-time when Alice Kelly scored an amazing goal from a kick-out. This was followed by goals from Eve Bailey, Jessica Clarke and Lucy Maguire, which made the score stand at 2-2. We had only caught our breath when the full-time whistle for Extra-Time had ended and a penalty shootout took place to try find a winner. The teams traded goals and saves for quite some time before the winners were eventually found.

Hull was crowned the inaugural champions as friends and family swarmed the court to congratulate and commiserate all involved.

After a few words of thanks, the presentations began as Ms. Lamplugh presented awards to the Match Officials before the Runners-Up and the Winners medals were distributed. It seems that in the blink of an eye, we have come from a Friday afternoon in March when 12 teams began this journey, to the moment when Alice Kelly and Sophia Kenny raised the Alex 150 Cup aloft to huge applause. I have been lucky enough to attend to many sporting occasions and some of the world’s most iconic stadiums, but I honestly think that the Alex Cup Final 2017 will be very much on my list of great sporting occasions to have witnessed. Thank you and well done to all involved and hopefully we can do it all again next year!

1. 150 Years Celebrations – September

This academic year marked 150 years of Alexandra College. Founded in 1866, Alexandra College has been at the forefront of education for girls ever since.

During this historic year, many events took place to celebrate Alex150. The Alex 150 Parents Ball was organised by the parents of the College, for the parents and staff of the College. This event was to celebrate the people that help make Alexandra College the incredible place that it is.

A key event in the Alex150 calendar was The Ardilaun Lecture by Professor Roy Foster. The theme of this lecture was “Women, Radicalisation and the Irish Revolution”. Following the lecture, Professor Foster launched the book “Pioneering Alexandrans”, edited by Ronan Fanning. The book showcases seventy-seven people who reflect the diversity that encapsulates the pioneers and innovators of Ireland’s most prestigious educational establishments.

To find out more about the Ardilaun Lecture click here.  To read more about the 150 Year’s celebrations click here.

2. Culwick 2016 – Nov 2016

There are many things that set Alexandra College apart from other schools and one of those is the Culwick Choral Competition, a musical competition which has been running in Alexandra College for 84 consecutive years. Many alumnae rate taking part in Culwick among their favourite Alex experiences.

You can read more about this tradition and watch videos from this year’s competition using this link.

3. The Joan Davies ‘Women in Leadership & Entrepreneurship’ –Nov 2016

Returning for the second year and organised by the Prefects this year’s Joan Davies ‘Women in Leadership and Entrepreneurship’ Event once again brought together some of the most successful female leaders in Ireland for a speaker series.

Using the links below, you can read more about the speakers featured here and watch videos from the event here.

4.Hermione Art Exhibition 2017 – Feb 2017

The Hermione Exhibition at Alexandra College was established to complement the Hermione Art Lecture which has taken place annually since 1896. Both events arise from an endowment in memory of Hermione Fitzgerald, the 5th Duchess of Leinster, a fervent advocate of the arts. This year, the Lecture was given by Alexandra College past pupil and internationally renowned artist Joy Gerrard.

You can read more about the exhibition here, and view pictures from the night here.

5. Alex Artisans Market – May 2017

The Artisans Market is an annual tradition in Alexandra College. Transition year students create their own business from start to finish. This involves creating a budget, monitoring expenses through book keeping, marketing their stand (both in and outside of the College), designing the look of their stands, deciding on the food they will sell and how to make this food, creating posters and much more.

This is an amazing opportunity for the students to gain knowledge of all aspects of running a small business. Students also give half of all earnings to a charity of their choice.

You can read more and view photos from the day by clicking here.

6. Transition Year Musical My Fair Lady

This year’s TY musical was My Fair Lady. The students and staff worked incredibly hard and we were treated to two fantastic sold out performances.

You can read more about the musical here. To see the photos from the show click here.

7. Fun Day

Each year Fun Day begins with a debate. Two groups comprising teachers and students debate over predetermined topics. The final topic is given to them on the day and they are given 15 minutes to create their argument. While they prepare the final discussion, students are called up to discuss various topics. This year’s topics included “Does pineapple belong on pizza?”. After the debate finishes, students compete in sports day activities on the sports pitches.

You can see photos from the two events here.

Regional Finalist – 2016 Intel Mini Scientist Competition – December 2016

Belle Moore (J4) Title: Using Drones to Deliver Parcels in Dublin: a Feasibility Study

Read about the remarkable work that Belle Moore has put into her project. We would like to wish her all the very best as she takes part in the regional final of the competition.

“I have been very busy since I won the Intel Mini Scientist Competition in our school on November 17th. I have visited the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) who makes the rules and regulations for drone flight in Ireland. They were very helpful, especially Captain Niall Cummins. They gave me lots of information and a tour of their offices.

I visited FDS Worldwide who deliver Parcels all over the world to ask if they thought international drone parcel delivery would ever be possible. The staff filled in questionnaires which were very informative. I also visited the cockpit of an Aer Lingus Airbus 320. Captain Karl Mc Quaid explained to me about radar and drones. I was invited to a Civil Defence Awards ceremony in the Phoenix Park where some of their members were awarded their drone training certificates. RTE were there filming and it was on the news that night.

Last weekend, I became the youngest person in Ireland to have received the IAA approved iFly Technology Drone Training Groundschool Certificate. I had two tests – an open book test and a closed book test – and I got 89% overall. It was very interesting and the course took two full days to complete. I’m looking forward to competing on behalf of Alexandra Junior School in the Regional Finals of the Mini Intel Scientist Competition in Leixlip.”

On to the Grand Finals of Mini Scientist for Belle Moore! – December 2016

Belle Moore competed in the regional final of the Intel Mini-Scientist competition. We are delighted to inform you that Belle Moore’s project on drones has made it through to the Grand Final of the competition in the Helix, DCU, on February 3rd 2017. Congratulations, Belle! This is a remarkable achievement.

Belle Moore (J4) – Runner Up in Grand Final – February 2017

Ireland’s first approved parcel delivery by drone was completed last Saturday in Dun Laoghaire by our very own Belle Moore in J4! The flight was part of her research for a project on drones for the Mini Intel Scientist Competition. It took two minutes to complete, with the drone taking the parcel from the shoreline to the boat almost 200m away. Belle’s sister, Betty, was in the boat that received the parcel.

Belle presented her project today (Friday) at the Grand Final of the Intel Mini Scientist Competition in the Helix in DCU. She came in second place overall – congratulations!!! This is an amazing achievement and we are all so proud of Belle.

In May, the J5 girls had a fabulous two days working together in small teams taking on the role of Directors in a company. They were jointly responsible for coming up with a new product or service, communicating its benefits and acquiring an investment in order to develop and market it. The J5 girls really got into the spirit of the programme and produced excellent products.

Fitgo, Fit It, Kidbit, Lunchalot and Sampbe were the names of their creative and innovative products. They presented their projects to a group of business people and looked for an investor to help them sell their products. I am pleased to report that all five groups were successful. When asked what they had thought of their Bizworld experience, the girls replied, “Fun, so enjoyable, realistic, real-life business, team work and amazing”.

Thank you so much to Aileen and Kerry from Bank of Ireland for running this programme in the school. Special thanks also to Alan Hartley and Ben Rance from Bank of Ireland for being part of the Dragons’ Den Team. The judges gave very positive feedback to all the groups commenting in particular on their confidence in presenting their product, creativity, research and super ideas. Well done, girls!

Bizworld Regional Final

Following on from the very successful Bizworld programme that took place in J5, one of the groups was selected to compete in the Dublin Regional Final in Trinity College.

PAD Trip to Bad Iburg and Berlin by Aoife Sadlier

Aoife Sadlier is a TY student who was awarded a scholarship (A culture and language course in Germany) from the German Embassy based on her outstanding results in German in the Junior Certificate exam last year. She has just returned from the trip and this is her account of it.

I was lucky enough to be selected to go on a three-week-long trip to Germany, starting the 7th of June. It was an amazing opportunity and I am sure the memories and friends I made will last a lifetime! I got to travel Germany and explore its culture while improving my German at the same time. The whole experience was very beneficial and I learnt so much.

Our adventure started at 4:20 in the morning in Dublin Airport. I had not previously met any of the other eleven Irish students also going on the trip, but we instantly bonded and it was as if we had known each other for years! The trip to Bad Iburg, the small town in which we would be staying with our host families, was an eventful one for sure because between missing trains and trains not arriving as scheduled, the trip took a little longer than expected. We met with our exchange partners for the first time outside of their school. I had not had much contact with my partner before arriving, which meant that I was not sure what to expect. However, I was reassured when I met the family and saw how welcoming and friendly they were.

Classes at Gymnasium Bad Iburg, the local secondary school, started at 7:30 in the morning. This was a bit of a culture shock as the school day in Ireland typically starts at 9.00. Exhausted from the long journey time the day before, we found the early start rather difficult! We got the opportunity to go to class with our partners and I was surprised that although there were many similarities, a lot was different as well. I found that the student-teacher relationship was much more formal there than it is in Ireland and that the work they did involved little to no writing. I also found it strange that half of their overall grade for each was based on their participation. It also was strange being in a mixed school again, as I currently go to an all-girls school. The rest of the time we spent in the school was in a special language class that was only for the Irish students. We got to choose what we wanted to learn in these classes. Instead of being a formal class situation, we did fun activities and things like having class outside or using songs to learn vocabulary. I found they were very useful for reviewing grammar points and learning new vocabulary as well as learning a bit about German culture.

We also had the opportunity to go on several trips during our stay. The first was a tour of Bad Iburg, which didn’t take very long seeing as Bad Iburg is quite a small town! We toured the local castle and also went to the town hall, where we got to meet the mayor and get our photo taken for the local newspaper. Our second outing was to Münster. We had a tour guide for the first part who took the group to see all the main tourist attractions, such as the Münster Cathedral and the town hall. For the next three hours, the group split up and we explored the city by ourselves. This meant getting lost many, many times, but it was a lot of fun all the same! Our next trip was to the Ideenexpo in Hannover. It was a six-hour round trip, but it was worth it! This exhibition had everything from trampolining to live music. Many major technology companies had stalls there where you could experience events like hover boarding, learn about aerodynamics, and take part in race car simulations. They also had all sorts of foods available, such as falafel, pizza, currywurst and frozen yoghurt. Of all of the excursions we did, this was definitely one of my favourites. Finally, we went to Osnabrück, the closest big city to Bad Iburg. We did another city tour and visited yet another town hall as well as the old part of the city. After the tour, we were given three hours of free time where we were able to explore, go shopping and get lunch. During the second week, I got the opportunity to go back to Osnabrück again, this time with my German partner’s class. We went into the science university and did a workshop on DNA and even got to see live DNA. Even after only a week, my German had improved, which meant although I did not understand exactly everything that was being said, I could follow it comfortably.

My host family was very considerate and keen that I would get a good insight into German life. Every evening, they organised an activity either with them or with some of the other Irish students, such as getting ice cream in the local ice cream parlour! On my second day, they brought me to a show put on by the sixth year students in the school. They had clearly put a lot of work into it and it was complete with a band, improvisations and games. One thing we did was go to a Bergfest, which was the German equivalent of a céilí, complete with traditional German lederhosen and dirndls. We also got to go with the whole year to the theatre to see a play called “Nathan der Weise” set in the 17th century. I cannot say that I understood much of what was going on, but it was an interesting cultural experience. In Germany, they have their ‘debs’ or ‘prom’ before the sixth years leave the school; as it coincided with our visit, we were able to attend. It was a lot of fun and I got to meet lots of new people and make new friends. Other activities included making pizzas and going to the Zoo, to Osnabrück, the outdoor swimming pool and to an adventure centre!

After two weeks in Bad Iburg, we left our German guest families and went to Berlin for five days. By this stage, we were all exhausted! Our first day, we visited urban gardens located in an old air hangar, a venue that provides allotments for people living in apartments to grow plants. While I had read about this concept before, it was interesting to see it in practice and reinforced my impression of Germany as a very environmentally-aware ‘green’ country. We attended a street concert as part of the Fête de la Musique and got ice cream afterwards, which we really loved! We visited lots of tourist attractions the next day such as the Berlin Wall museum and were given a guided tour of an area where the wall used to stand, the Jewish Holocaust Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, the Ampelmann store, the Regierungsviertel, which is where all the government buildings are and the Reichstagsgebäude, which is where the government meets. The next day, we were able to split up and were given four hours to do whatever we liked in Berlin. I thought this was a great idea because it meant we got to choose what we wanted to do, see and explore. Later in the day, we did a workshop about what happened to the Jews in Germany in the Second World War. Following the workshop, we went to Alexanderplatz and did a tour of the Fernsehturm. Our fourth day was spent in Potsdam, a nearby city. Although it took about an hour to get there and back, it was a great experience, as Potsdam is very different to Berlin and a really beautiful little city. We visited the picturesque Sanssouci Castle and walked around the gardens. Afterwards, we went back to Alexanderplatz in Berlin where we were given an hour to go shopping. As it was our last night, we went bowling, which was a lot of fun. On our last day in Berlin, we visited Checkpoint Charlie, the Concert house in Berlin, Museum Island and a Jewish synagogue that had been destroyed during the war and then rebuilt afterwards. We then took a bus to the airport and arrived back in Ireland at 21:00.

I am so grateful to have been given such a wonderful opportunity. I had the most amazing time in Germany. Not only did I get the chance to travel around the country, visiting lots of different cities and obtaining a real insight into German life and German culture, I also got to improve my German and make lifelong friends. Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland!

2. Ailwee Cave

The Aillwee Cave is one of the oldest caves in Ireland. Thirty years after the farmer discovered the cave, it was developed into the wonderful attraction it is today.

Located in Co. Antrim, only 7 miles from the Giant’s Causeway, entry is reasonably priced and parking is free.

The first round offers will come out on Monday the 21st and will go to those who have achieved the required points (or higher) for their CAO choices. If you have achieved sufficient points for your first choice, you will be offered that course and you will not have the option to select your second choice.

If you were offered your second, third or fourth choice during the first round, you may still be offered your first choice during the second round of offers. This will depend on how many people achieved the required points or accepted their place in that specific course. You can accept an offer and will have the opportunity to accept one of your higher choices, should you be offered a place in the second round.

Offers will continue until all of the places on each course are taken, so don’t worry if you did not receive an offer first time round, there will be other opportunities to get into the course you want.

We hope you are happy with the results you receive, however, if you are not satisfied you will have the opportunity to view one of your exam papers. You must request this before 4.00pm on August 21nd and viewings will take place at the College in early September. You can bring one other person with you; it is always a good idea to bring a relative or a friend as teachers are unlikely to be available due to the viewing times being scheduled on the weekend.

We wish you all the very best of luck!
