On Wednesday the 21th of February, the Fourth Years were provided with a subject information day. This was used to give the students a taste of what is involved in the syllabus of each Leaving Certificate subject. Each of the teachers explained their subjects, exam layout and who they would recommend to choose it. It clarified any doubts and answered any questions that our students had. Students also had the chance to sit in a Fifth Year class of any subject they are unsure of and could get a glimpse of what’s involved.

The subjects and teacher that we were informed about were as follows:

Agricultural Science and Biology –  Dr. Byrne, Ms. Pearse

Chemistry – Ms. Ryan

Physics and Applied Maths – Mr. Cushen

Home Economics – Ms. Fitzmaurice, Ms. McCoy

Art – Ms. Crowley, Ms. Lyons

French, Italian, Spanish, German – Ms. Zak, Ms. Duggan, Ms. Biondi, Ms. Maxwell

Transition Year Physics Experience In Trinity College.

The Transition Year students went to Trinity College on the 27th February for the Transition Year Physics Experience.

When we arrived, they gave us a timetable, which explained what we were going to learn.

There were six classes in total. The first class was about the physics of sports. We learned how the physics within our bodies work when we play basketball, hockey etc.

The second class was based on Kitchen Physics. It was about the power of nano-science and how we can perform experiments in our kitchens as if they were laboratories

The third class was about Waves, Light and Sound. The professor performed a few experiments showing basic concepts of Physics.

In the fourth class, the professor introduced the conservation laws with a few experiments.

During the fifth class, we were taught about the importance of looking and studying nano-scale objects and tissues.

Finally, the last lecturer showed us the variety of jobs related to physics that we can study.

We would like to thank Trinity College for giving us this opportunity to learn about Physics. We were really happy that we had the chance to attend this course and take part in the experiments, that we do not usually witness in our daily lives. We would love to take part in more of these classes and we encourage other Alexandra College students to apply and take part in this experience.

Hermione Art Exhibition – The Opening Evening

On Tuesday evening, March 6th, the 2018 Hermione Art Exhibition took place. This year was the first time that the Junior School students joined forces with the Senior School students to showcase and exhibit their work. The result was a beautiful exhibit of student work, which displayed the amazing talents of our students, from KG Lower in the Junior school, all the way up through the grades to Sixth Year in the Senior school.

It was against this backdrop of emerging talents that established artist and longtime supporter of the Hermione Exhibition, Una Sealy, gave a fascinating and thoroughly engaging talk to the eager audience. She took her listeners on an in-depth journey of her artworks, sharing her vast knowledge of painting through personal recounts and amusing anecdotes. She showed images of her work detailing her beginnings as a young graduate artist in the 1980’s right through to her current body of work today. By showing the audience a wide selection of her work, Una was able to illustrate how her work has progressed over the years as her techniques and skills developed. She also conveyed, through the background stories associated with the artworks and the wonderfully detailed pieces themselves, the passion and enjoyment she gets from creating such wonderful works of art.

Finally,  Una offered some words of inspiration for today’s young artists. It was a thoroughly a fitting and inspiring talk to round off the 2018 Hermione Art Exhibition here at Alexandra College.

This week, the culture club looked at international movies and the Oscars. We learnt some interesting facts such as the weight of the Oscar Statue, which is an incredible 5.5kg! We also learnt that Italy has won the most awards for best International film at the Academy Awards. We also looked at strange translations of popular movies from around the world. In next week’s Culture Club, Ms. Dean plans to talk to the girls about a very popular sweet treat that originates from Brazil. She will also get the girls to try some. In addition to this, we will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party where students will get a chance to learn about this festival along with festivals from around the world. So come along next Wednesday at lunchtime – we would love you to join us!

Junior DramSoc Preformance –“The Lottie Project”

Our play this year was “The Lottie Project”, an adaption of a book by Jacqueline Wilson.

It took place at 17.00 and 19.30 in the lecture theatre. The play is about Charlie Enright. While in history class, her class is told to do a project on the Victorians. While doing this, she discovers a picture of a Victorian servant who looks a bit like her. She decides to do her project on servants.

Both shows were a big success, with brilliant turnouts. There was great fun among members of the cast, crew and directors. Great thanks to Ms.O’Cathain, Ms.Quinn, all of the Transition Year crew, and of course, the cast! I speak for all of us when I say that we will miss this play dearly, and all of the fun that came with rehearsing it!

Intermediate DramSoc Production –“Fugee”

This year, the Intermediate DramSoc put on a production of the play ‘Fugee’ by Abi Morgan. It tells the story of Kojo, a 14-year-old boy from the Ivory Coast whose family was shot in front of him. He was forced to fight as a child soldier and escaped to Ireland. He is then placed in the Irish system and given eight weeks to prove his age, which is disputed by the social workers.

We’ve never done a play like Fugee before. The story jumps from place to place and while it was a bit confusing reading the script at the start, it fitted the story and allowed Kojo’s family and past to be shown throughout the play. It was a challenging topic, as the play deals with serious themes and the refugee crisis, which is still going on today. However, instead of lecturing the audience on the refugee crisis and listing off statistics, the play showed the human side of this issue. It showed the children and teenagers, the same age as us, who get caught up in violence and are shuffled from place to place, often without a family. It told one boy’s story, but there are thousands of others in the world who share a story like Kojo. Since 2001, there have been reports of child soldiers being used in 21 conflicts around the world and according to the UN, 1 in every 122 people is now a refugee. People often see the people that are part of this crisis as numbers on a page, not as humans or individuals, but this play showed the human side. It showed that refugees are people, just like any of us, in need of help.

I think the story definitely had a huge effect on all of us. We rehearsed the play, we learnt more about the issue. It took 5 months of work and rehearsal, with fast set scene changes and a complex theme, but it was worth it.

Fugee is an incredibly important story and one that applies to every country around the world. It wasn’t like anything we’d ever done before, but I hope we get to do something like this again.

Transition Year – Work Experience in DNG

On the second week of our Transition Year work experience in February, three of the TY students, Nora Redmond, Faye Maguire and Deirdre Luo, went for a week-long course in the very prestigious real estate company, DNG.

It was a wonderful week of learning about real estate. We even got to shadow a few agents, all while wearing suits and heels!

There were twenty TY students there that week, and we made plenty of friends from different schools. The course really gave us an amazing and detailed knowledge about a career in real estate. There is no doubt that the experience we got that week could never have come from a book or website!

DNG was also generous enough to take us to a lovely Italian restaurant for a “company dinner”.

It was definitely a wonderful and very well-organised course with the most amazing mentors we could ask for.

Transition Year Student Enterprise Awards Dublin Final 2018

On March 6th, four of us got the chance to compete at the Student Enterprise Awards Dublin Final 2018 for a place in the All Ireland Final come April.

We developed the idea for our business when we spotted a gap in the market. It involved looking at illness and infection caused by dirty mouth guards that had fallen on the ground. We wanted to change that, so we created a unique wearable gum shield holder in the form of a leg or arm strap, called ‘SafeTBand’.

Our idea was to produce a band that could fit around your leg/arm and hold your mouthguard in place when you are not using it during a sporting activity where gum shields are needed. This would prevent it from falling on the ground and, therefore, minimising the number of bacteria infecting your mouth guard.

Unfortunately, we were not chosen to continue on to the finals, but it was an interesting experience and we had a great time.

Transition Year – Young Social Innovators

A huge congratulations to the Transition Year Young Social Innovator team who participated in the regional Dublin YSI Speak Out held in the Mansion House on Tuesday, March 6th.

Young Social Innovators is an action programme where young people advocate for change and ‘speak out’ about issues of concern to them as well as listen to other teams who are making a difference. The Alex YSI team chose to address the issue of mental health and have spent the last year advocating for change and raising awareness in our school community. The team made handmade positive affirmation cards, that they sold to promote positive thinking and wellbeing and raised funds for mental health awareness in Alex. The team presented their project ‘Our Place – A Safe Space’ in a two minute presentation to over 300 students and YSI Guides at the Round Room in the Mansion House. They incorporated the creative elements of poetry and posters to ‘speak out’ about their social issue.

We also heard from schools around Dublin who are advocating change and raising awareness on social issues such as poverty, homelessness, consent, road safety, animal rights and disability rights.

Guest speakers included anti-Apartheid Striker Mary Manning, social entrepreneur Amr Dawood and spoken word poet Brian McMahon Gallagher.

Overall it was an inspiring day seeing so many young people together sharing their ideas and advocating for change in our world.

On Wednesday, March 7th, the Transition Year filmmaking class and three Fifth Year students went to the IFI in Temple Bar to attend the Dublin central heat for the Fresh Film Festival 2018.

We had entered two films into the competition: ‘One of Us’ by Deirdre Luo, Lucy McDermott, Cliodhna Coakley, Halle Steele, Brooke Grey, Maria Nieto and Maria Camino and ‘Turning Pages’ by Sthiti Padhy, Rameen Khalid, Alison McMorrow, Aoife McMorrow and Nicole Gallagher.

We had all put our heart and soul into writing, filming and editing these short films and, after months of hard work, our efforts were rewarded as both films reached the final in Storm Cinema, Limerick which will be held on the 21st March.

It was a wonderful day of watching fantastic films made by other students our age and we had the pleasure of interacting with some of the other directors, editors and actors!

Needless to say, it was an amazing experience that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

First Aid Gaisce Training

Gary Henneberry is an OFA instructor and, on Wednesday, he came to Alexandra College to teach the Transition Year students basic First Aid as part of their Gaisce Award.

On the 5th of March 2018, the girls had their last Gaisce class before their test to get their First Aid certificate. He re-capped on major parts of the course like CPR and the recovery position. However, the main purpose of this class was to teach the girls how to use a defibrillator to potentially save someone’s life.

After all of our training, we were given the test. All the Transition Year girls who did this course really enjoyed it and found it very beneficial due to Gary’s great teaching.

Many thanks too to Ms Fanagan for organising this great course.

Katie Gregg 4Y

First Aid Non-Gaisce Training

On the 6th and 7th of March, the Transition Year students who have not done First Aid for Gaisce had a course in the HWC to learn the basic knowledge and skills of First Aid.

Gary, our instructor, taught us how to deal with different emergency situations such as a stroke or a broken ankle. We were shown how to use bandages and treat a wound, including more crucial skills like CPR.

In the class, we were taught through lively role-play and very informative DVDs; everyone had great fun as well as learnt a lot from it.

These skills are vital for us to be prepared for an unexpected emergency situation and will help us to protect our family and friends. These are life skills that we all need today.

How The College Cares for its Alumnae; the Hard Work of the Alexandra College Alumnae Bursaries Charity

When something has been around for well over a hundred years, its proof that it serves a valuable purpose.

In a forward-thinking move, back in 1897, the College set up the Alexandra College Alumnae Bursaries Charity (formerly known as The Alexandra Guild) to put into practice the school’s philanthropic ethos.

The Charity’s initial aim was to assist past pupils and staff of the College who found themselves in financial difficulty.

Through the work of the Alumnae Bursaries Committee, Alexandra College pupils (both past and present) can offer assistance to women in need, of all denominations and from all walks of life, whether they are connected to the College or not. In so doing they can give something back to the community while acknowledging their own fortunate circumstances.

However, the important work of the committee is only possible due to the input from past pupils, who honour their connection to the charity, either by serving on the Committee itself, by making donations to the charity or by getting involved in and supporting the fundraising events run by the committee.

Our Alexandra College Alumnae Committee is the powerhouse of the charity, carrying out stellar work. There is a whole team of people contributing to the charity including Chairperson – Clodagh Conroy, Hon Secretary – Sinéad Buckley, Hon Treasurer – Rachel Barry, Jane Grindle, Priscilla Kirwan Browne, Gemma Dargan, Aisling O’Kelly, Fiona Ryan and Susan Whelan. Many thanks to all our committee members for their continued hard work.

Several popular events are organised annually and are well attended by past pupils, whose continued support is truly vital to their continued existence and is greatly appreciated.

Alexandra College Alumnae

We currently have 1,320 members in our Alexandra College Alumnae Network, and as we are only as strong as our members, we are always on the lookout for new faces. You stand to gain so much without having to pay a cent in membership charges.

As a past pupil of Alexandra College, you are automatically a member of the Alumnae, so if you are not currently availing of the priceless wisdom and networking opportunities on offer, you’re missing out. So sign up and get on board – start talking to like-minded people. It’s amazing how willing our Alumnae are to go the extra mile for each other. You can sign up to the Alumnae emailing list here (will be linked).

The Alexandra College Alumnae Network is structured as an umbrella committee with its own bank account and comprises of subcommittees within, which look after specific areas to enhance its smooth operation.

Annual Wash Bag Appeal

The Alexandra College Alumnae Bursaries Charity Wash Bag Appeal is taking place on March 14th this year. These wash bags are donated to the Women’s Refuge. Toiletries and other things that we take for granted are very scarce commodities at the Women’s Refuge. The TY pupils coordinate the collection of deodorant, shower gel, shampoo, moisturiser etc and arrange them into cheery wash bags.

As a reward for the pupils’ participation in the project, a ‘Pizza Party’ is up for grabs for the TY form that collects the most wash bags!

In 2016 over 200 wash bags were donated, providing a five-month supply for women at the Refuge, and no doubt making their day a little more bearable. With an incredible effort from the students and parents, they managed to more than double this number in 2017, making 510 wash bags, which meant that we provided the women with almost one year’s supply.

The Alexandra College Alumnae Bursaries Charity annually award one Bursary to the Women’s Refuge in Rathmines, to provide help for women leaving the shelter to start independent lives.

Spring Charity Lunch

The inaugural Alexandra College Bursaries Spring Charity Lunch took place on 23rd February at the fabulous location that is Marco Pierre White Restaurant, on Dawson St. This was the first event for parents to get directly involved and learn more about the work of the Alexandra College Alumnae Bursary Charity. Tickets for this exclusive event included lunch, prosecco and entertainment from Alumnae actors Rose Henderson and Isobel Mahon. The event was an incredible success for the Alexandra College Alumnae Bursaries Charity raising €8,350 which will cover three and a half bursaries this year. We plan to make this an annual event.

Also in February, just before half term, we held our annual Father and Daughter Pancake Breakfast. The event was a super success as record numbers attended – everyone enjoyed the pancakes and the chocolate sauce came in for a substantial amount of praise. The event afforded “the dads” a chance to meet each other and spend some time with their daughters in the school environment.

The Alexandra Alumnae Bursary committee has now appointed three Fifth Year students to be their ‘Bursaries Ambassadors’. Stephanie Foley, Lucy Grindle and Aisling Whelan are the three girls now taking up this role.

These girls will be working more closely with the committee helping to coordinate the events that run through the College, like the Christmas Hampers, Pancake Day and the Wash Bag Appeal. They will bring news of the charity initiatives and their women in need back to the student body and so build better communication and understanding of the work of the Bursaries Charity. These girls will be awarded a Humanities Prize for their community service work on Prize Day.

Huge thanks to Ms Barbara Ennis and Ms Avril Lamplugh, to George and his staff, and to the Fifth Year girls and fathers who helped out on the day.

We are also very grateful to all who showed their support by attending these events and those who made donations to the Alexandra College Alumnae Bursaries Charity. It is very much appreciated.

International Cap Awarded to Ms. Evans

We are all very proud of Ms. Evans on this great achievement – Well done!

“I started playing rugby when I was 19. I played for 3 clubs in the UK before moving to Ireland. I was also selected to play for the Welsh women’s team and I represented Wales against Holland and England.

After I moved to Dublin, I joined Old Belvedere Rugby Club and continued to enjoy my sport. In 1996, I began training with the Irish team and the following year I was selected to play for Ireland! My first match for my adopted country was against Germany, in Germany. I then went on to play against Scotland and Wales before retiring in 1999.

Male rugby players have been awarded caps for representing their country for a long time, but women have only been awarded them since 2006 so, after much discussion, the IRFU decided to recognise all international players who played for Ireland between 1993 (the first ever international match involving an Irish team) and 2005. This was done by presenting each of the 109 players with a specially made cap at a dinner held in the Aviva Stadium on Sunday 11th March. It was an incredible occasion with women flying in from all over the world; many from the UK and even from as far as New Zealand! I met up with some friends I had not seen for 20 years! It was fantastic to have our achievements finally recognised after all these years”.

Cath Evans

News from Preschool Red!

Preschool Red has continued to welcome and enjoy the endless and imaginative creativity that February and March have brought, whilst managing to find time to celebrate with all our recent birthday girls!

We enjoyed learning about St. Patrick and making special snakes and parade wands.

We then turned our attention to engineering complicated Leprechaun traps! We look forward to seeing if any of our great designs will manage to catch a little sneaky leprechaun or what he might do if caught! We will be watching closely and will let you know if we have any luck!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone! ☘

Ms Boyd, Miss Dolan and all the Preschool Red girls.

Soccer News!

On Monday 12th of March, the first soccer team to represent our Junior School in an FAI tournament went to Irishtown Stadium in Ringsend to play 5-A-Side against schools from all over Dublin.

The girls from Alex very much held their own getting a win and two draws from our eight games played in total. It must be remembered that we were playing against schools who have a tradition of playing and winning in this competition, and where soccer is the primary sport.

The girls played exceptionally well, never giving up, attacking to the best of their ability and above all, having fun and enjoying the day. The even had time between the games to have a very competitive penalty shootout competition that was very entertaining.

Alex was captained on the day by Katie Mullan and Alannah Whelehan (both J6), while special ‘MVP’ Awards were given to Meredith Pitts (J6) and Lucia Geary (J5) for their outstanding display of skill and positive attitude.

The teams in full were:

Amélie Zhurkin (Goals), Katie Mullan, Lucy Maguire, Lucia Geary, Isobel Baxter, Emily Keogh, Ella Mansfield and Carmen Corpa (Team 1).

Claudia Flannery (Goals), Anabel O’ Hora, Alannah Whelehan, Meredith Pitts, Julia Clarke, Betrys Davies, Danielle Lowe and Aisling Finn (Team 2).

Many thanks to Ms. Tracey and Ms. Higgins for their assistance in accompanying the team and helping with the registration of the team for the tournament respectively.

Looking forward to the Alex Cup Soccer League after Easter.

I started playing rugby when I was 19. I played for 3 clubs in the UK before moving to Ireland. I was also selected to play for the Welsh women’s team and I represented Wales against Holland and England.
After I moved to Dublin I joined Old Belvedere Rugby Club and continued to enjoy my sport. In 1996 I began training with the Irish team and the following year I was selected to play for Ireland! My first match for my adopted country was against Germany, in Germany. I then went on to play against Scotland and Wales before retiring in 1999.
Male rugby players have been awarded caps for representing their country for a long time but women have only been awarded them since 2006 so, after much discussion, the IRFU decided to recognise all international players who played for Ireland between 1993 (the first ever international match involving an Irish team) and 2005. It was fantastic to have our achievements finally recognised after all these years.

Transition Year Italy Trip 2018

On Monday 26th of February at 5.30 am, twelve excited TY students gathered in Dublin Airport.

We met our Italian teachers before our flight. A few hours later, we arrived in Milan and got on a bus that brought us to Cuneo. Our exchange partners greeted us at the school and we spent the afternoon together exploring the market.

On our second day, we played bonding games with the Italians. They were all really lovely and we got to know them better.

We spent the next two days skiing in Limone Piemonte. When we arrived and had put on our boots and skis, we were split into two groups, beginners and people who had skied before. Both groups had instructors who were really nice and helpful. The snow was so thick and fluffy as it snowed almost constantly while we were there. Those two days flew and were so fun.

On Friday, we took the train to Turin, and did a tour of the city centre with a guide. We saw many historical buildings and it was very interesting. We were given a few hours free time for shopping and lunch and then met up to go to the cinema museum. The cinema museum was so cool and we were shown how shadows and light can create pictures. We were also shown how 3D works and more modern photography styles.

We also toured Alba, Barolo, Pollenzo and saw the beautiful architecture and vineyards.

Overall it was a great experience and we can’t wait to have the Italian girls back to Dublin. We’d also like to thank our teachers that came with us. We really appreciate all you did for us.

Transition Year – St Michael’s College

This Tuesday the Transition Year students went to a Céilí during Seachtain na Gaeilge with the 4th Year students of St Michael’s College.

We want to share with you the experience we had dancing Céilí for the first time. When we arrived there, we admit that we felt a bit nervous, but only for a short time. All of a sudden, we were all dancing with our respective partners. The nervousness we felt at the beginning vanished, letting us enjoy a good time with the students of St Michael’s. We all had a really good time with them and learned a few basic steps. We also played some games that were really fun and helped us to be more open with each other.

We want to thank St Michael’s College for inviting us to their school and especially to the 4th Year students, because we had a great time together.
